Scientific activities

From September to May, the Centre organises a monthly seminar with the intention of offering a forum for debate to up-and-coming as well as established historians, to valorise recent research on subjects that are
sometimes controversial and to act as a meeting place for researchers of universities in Belgium and abroad.
The Centre regularly organises study days, national and international symposia.

Congress of the German Association of Archivists on archives in the digital era

In September 2009, the German archivists held a conference on archives in the digital era. The digitisation of our world does not only play an important role in work, daily life and leisure, but has an increasing impact on day to day archival work. The flow of digital documents confronts thearchivists with important challenges, such as appreciation, selection or long-term-keeping. At the same time, information technology offers a wide range of possibilities, among others in the field of the accessibility and the opening up of archives.

It is dedicated to the city of Brussels (to order it, click here). The series will also comprise a volume on Antwerp, the Flemish cities, the Walloon cities and “War in the Village”. Writing the History of the Second World War in Europe. A State of Affairs

On the 18th of December 2008, the symposium on “Writing the History of the Second World War in Europe: A State of Affairs” took place in Brussels, in the conference room of the SOMA/CEGES. It was the first of three activities that will be organised by the Centre celebrating its fortieth anniversary. The objective of the symposium was to draw up the balance of the historiography of the Second World War in Europe.
With regard to countries represented on the symposium, both obvious choices – Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany – and less obvious ones were made – Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Poland, Sweden and former Yugoslavia. The end of the Cold War led to the opening of closed archives, but also to a new historiography in countries that used to belong to the Soviet Empire.

Of the greatest importance are also the accessibility and the visibility of the Holocaust archives in the different countries.

Belgique-Congo.
