Scientific activities
From September to May, the Centre organises a monthly seminar with the intention of offering a forum for debate to up-and-coming as well as established historians, to valorise recent research on subjects that are
sometimes controversial and to act as a meeting place for researchers of universities in Belgium and abroad.
The Centre regularly organises study days, national and international symposia.
IUAP - Socio-political history of Belgian justiceInternational conference 'Justice in Wartimes and Revolutions: Europe, 1795-1950' In September 2011, the CEGES-SOMA will organise, in collaboration with some of the other partners of the IUAP-project 'Socio-political history of Belgian Justice', an international conference on 'Justice in Wartimes and Revolutions: Europe, 1795-1950'. Le mercredi 26 mai 2010, de 10 à 13 h, un séminaire consacré à l'occupation de garantie se tiendra au CEGES en partenariat avec l'Université de Lille III et, plus spécifiquement, avec le programme “Occupations militaires en Europe” Le Professeur Butron Prida (Université de Cadix) traitera de l'occupation française de l'Espagne de 1823 à 1828 tandis qu'Anne Godfroid (Musée de l'Armée) et Nicolas Mignon (UCL) aborderont la question de l'occupation de la Rhénanie et de la Ruhr par la Belgique au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale. |
Conference “The war of 1940. Fighting, suffering, remembering”On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the invasion of May-June 1940, an international symposium, co-organised by the Ceges/Soma, will be held in Lille from 9 to 11 June 2010. It will propose a cross approach of the analyses of some thirty researchers from the countries concerned.Political and military questions, the effects of the war on civilians through exodus and war damages will be raised as well as the question of remembrance via images and narrative, cemeteries and monuments. Congress of the German Association of Archivists on archives in the digital eraIn September 2009, the German archivists held a conference on archives in the digital era. The digitisation of our world does not only play an important role in work, daily life and leisure, but has an increasing impact on day to day archival work. The flow of digital documents confronts the archivists with important challenges, such as appreciation, selection or long-term-keeping. At the same time, information technology offers a wide range of possibilities, among others in the field of the accessibility and the opening up of archives.Read more... |
Cities at WarA collection beyond the clichés Newly published by the publishing house Luc Pire is the first of a series of photographic albums entitled Villes en guerre (Cities at War). It is dedicated to the city of Brussels (to order it, click here). The series will also comprise a volume on Antwerp, the Flemish cities, the Walloon cities and “War in the Village”. A thematic overview outlines the work and moulds the concept which of course leaves ample room for the image in its specific context. The scientific team of the Ceges/Soma is in charge of the realisation of the proposed volumes. |
40 years CEGES-SOMAColloquium “War and Society in 20th Century Europe” 9-11 December 2009 - SQUARE Brussels Meeting Centre (former Palace of Congresses)
The CEGES-SOMA is celebrating its 40th anniversary at the end of this year with a three-day international colloquium on the influence of wars on society throughout the 20th century. |
The military occupations in EuropeSince 2007, the Ceges/Soma has been associated to the project "Military occupations in Europe" funded by the French Agence nationale de la recherche. The key figure of this project is prof. Jean-François Chanet and it is steered by a research group of the Université de Lille III. It contemplates the theme of military occupations in a long- term perspective, from the 14th to the 20th century. Read more... |
