International conference, “The impact of WWI on marriages, divorces and gender relations in Europe”

On Thirsday 5 and Friday 6 October, the KULeuven will hold a conference on “The impact of WWI on marriages, divorces and gender relations in Europe ». This conference will examine the mutual influences of war, gender relations, and marriage and divorce patterns during and after the First World War.
It will focus on the relation between equality and inequality of men and women, as well as the impact of war on individual life trajectories. This topic will be approached from a comparative European perspective, but based on individual data. The aim is to combine the qualitative and quantitative approaches of historians, demographers and sociologists.

Florent Verfaillie, PhD researcher at CegeSoma will present a paper on female resistance fighters and collaborators during WWI in Belgium, and will analyse the social and family context, as well as their marriage situation.
