Koen Aerts (°1983) defended his doctoral thesis at Ghent University in 2011 and publised it under the title 'Repressie zonder maat of einde? De juridische re-integratie van collaborateurs in de Belgische staat na de Tweede Wereldoorlog' (AcademiaPress, 2014).
He was also chief editor of ‘Was opa een nazi/Papy était-il un nazi ?’ (Lannoo/Racine, 2017) and initiator of the reference site about the Second World War, created by CegeSoma/State Archives : www.belgiumwwii.be.

The research carried out for his book ‘Kinderen van de repressie’ (Polis, 2018) laid the basis for the documentary series ‘Kinderen van de collaboratie’ (2017) aired on Flemish TV station Canvas. He then took part as scientific collaborator in the elaboration of the follow-up series ‘Kinderen van het verzet’  (2019) and the documentary series ‘Enfants de la collaboration’ (2020) aired on Belgium's French language public broadcaster RTBF.
During his post-doctoral research at the Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek-Vlaanderen (2011-2017) and as scientific collaborator in the TRANSMEMO project by BELSPO (2017-2019), he studied the history and the transfer of remembrance about collaboration and resistance after the Second World War.
As senior researcher at the State Archives and as lecturer and postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University, he is in charge, since February 2020, of the implementation of the FEDTWIN People@War project at CegeSoma, which is the Operational Directorate IV of the State Archives.
